You can do everything right
and still sleep badly.
Here’s the mechanism.
and still sleep badly.
Here’s the mechanism.
The mechanism
Two forces that make sleep
Circadian drive — 24hr body clock run by SCN. Light entrains it. Melatonin is the evening signal.
Adenosine pressure — builds across all waking hours. Let the pressure build; don’t chase sleep.
Pivot
Chronic stress & HPA dysregulation
Cortisol stays elevated into the night. Suppresses melatonin. Blocks adenosine clearance.
Pivot absent
Sleep hygiene works
Consistent wake time anchors the clock
Temperature drop fires the onset signal
Adenosine pressure becomes effective
Pivot active
Cortisol overrides the model
Fragmented architecture, morning fog, hunger dysregulation
Stress-axis interventions become necessary — breath, movement, cognitive reframing
Do you notice your sleep worsens during high-stress periods — even when nothing else in your routine has changed?
